If you are considering adding a member to your family, a shelter animal could be the perfect fit! Our shelter is at capacity, and we need your help to find our animals homes to make room for new ones.

There are many reasons why a dog or cat might end up in a shelter, and it doesn’t mean they are “bad” or have behaviour issues. Some animals are strays or from families who couldn’t take care of them anymore for financial, medical, or other reasons out of their control. All these animals are equally deserving of finding their forever home, and their forever home could be with you!

Here are some of the reasons you should adopt a shelter animal:

  1. You will save two animals’ lives
One of the most rewarding parts of adopting from a shelter is knowing you are giving an animal a second chance at having a loving family. These pups and kitties are waiting to find their forever home and you could help make that a reality. By adopting from a shelter, you not only save the life of the animal you are adopting, but you also save the life of another animal who can then take their spot in the shelter!
  2. Adopting is an affordable option
The fees for a shelter animal are usually a lot less than what you would pay for an animal elsewhere. The money you save can be put toward your pet’s food or toys instead!

  3. They will already be up to date on vaccinations and come spayed/neutered
Most shelters will have a vet check every animal, give them vaccines, and spay/neuter them before they are adopted into a new family. This will save you time and money, and ensure your new furry friend is in good health.
  4. They will already have some training
A lot of shelters provide some basic training to ensure the animals in their care are ready for new homes. This will help give you a head start on training and make any future training easier!
  5. You can choose an animal of any age and any personality
Since the shelter staff already know the animals’ personalities and needs, they can help you find a pet who will fit lifestyle. Whether you want to avoid the puppy/kitten stage and get an animal who is older and more chill, or you want to raise them from when they are young, you have the option to do either. It is easier to find the perfect fit when you have more options to choose from, and background information on their personalities.
  6. You will be supporting the shelter
When a shelter animal gets a new home, it leaves more resources to care for other animals. A lot of shelters also do incredible work in their communities for animals who could otherwise not access care. With adoption fees going directly back to the shelter, this supports initiatives to do just that. Not to mention, when people see you adopted from a shelter, they may feel encouraged to adopt a shelter pet, too!

  7. You will help fight against overpopulation
Instead of encouraging breeding, you can adopt an animal who already needs a home. By supporting a shelter, you are supporting the humane treatment of animals and helping create a better quality of life for them.
  8. You will feel happier
Caring for a pet provides incredible benefits to your mental health, and brings so much joy to your life.

  9. You will gain a new companion
What’s better than having a furry friend by your side to support you? Animals make the best friends!

  10. They will give you unconditional love
The love and connection you have with a pet are unlike anything else because they give you true unconditional, judgement-free love.
